The short answer
Nobody can give you a number that fits every family. Each bank, insurer and agency may want its own certified copy, so count the places before you order. You can order more later from the state where the death happened.
If the funeral home wants an answer today, a rough count is enough to start, because you can add to it later.
This chapter explains how things usually work in the United States. It is not legal, tax or financial advice, and the rules where you live may differ. Before you act on anything here, check it with one of the people named at the end of the chapter.
What to do
- List every place that might need a certified copy.
- Order that many, through the funeral home or the state office.
- Check the first copy for mistakes before you send any.
- Ask each place whether a photocopy will do.
- Ask each office to send your certified copy back.
- Write down where each copy went.
What can wait
- Ordering more. The state office can send them later.
- Questions about how the cause of death is worded, unless an insurer or office says it is holding a claim.
- A complete list. A rough count is enough for the first order, and you can add places as you find them.
Who can help
The funeral director, who can tell you which state office to use and may order the copies for you.
The vital records office of the state where the death happened, for ordering, fees and corrections. CDC's page at cdc.gov/nchs/w2w lists its phone number.
If the medical examiner is involved, you can ask their office where the certificate stands.
The rules, phone numbers and web addresses in this book were checked against the agencies’, courts’ and organizations’ own pages in October 2026. Where a rule differs by state, the book names one state as an example. Check anything you rely on with the office itself.
