After Mom or Dad

Book Five · Siblings and the Estate · Chapter 11

How do I stay in my family afterward?

“The estate is nearly done. My sister and I are barely speaking. Is that just how it ends?”

The short answer

Not always. In the accounts families have shared, repair did come for some, but slowly and in small pieces: a card, an old photo, a message about something practical. Sometimes it came years later.

Winning in court, or an equal split, didn't repair anything on its own. Some families that held together credit rules they agreed early and then kept. Others chose distance, and that is a decision people make too.

What to do

  1. Decide what kind of relationship you want with each sibling, if any.
  2. Make one small gesture with no request attached, such as a card, a photo or a short message.
  3. Agree on one shared task, if the estate still has one, such as copying the photos.
  4. Leave the hardest topic for later.
  5. Agree how you will share your other parent's care, if they are alive.

What can wait

Who can help

A family therapist can help siblings talk, together or one at a time. If your siblings won't come, a counselor of your own can help you sort out what you want.

A mediator can help settle what's left of the estate.

If the distance weighs on you tonight, If tonight is hard, at the back of this book, lists people you can reach at any hour.

The rules, phone numbers and web addresses in this book were checked against the agencies’, courts’ and organizations’ own pages in October 2026. Where a rule differs by state, the book names one state as an example. Check anything you rely on with the office itself.
